things to do

Matakohe Kauri Museum

Visit Matakohe Museum , just 45 mins away for a memorable experience of this part of the country as it was in the days of kauri logging. Allow longer than you think, this is more than just a museum. See there website at http://www.kauri-museum.com/

Beach drive

Drive New Zealand's longest driveable beach - Ripiro Beach (no, the longest beach is not the 90 Mile Beach - enjoy our 128 kms of wild paradise). Check with locals for tide times and 4WD recommended, but not essential. Take a round trip to the bottom of the Pouto Peninsula by road and return by beach or vice versa. Baylys Beach is an ideal starting or finishing point, with the Funky Fish cafe a perfect start or finish to your adventure. If you prefer, take a 4WD beach tour with a local operator who will point out the up to 140 shipwrecks along the Kaipara coast.

Kai Iwi Lakes

Take a trip to Kai Iwi freshwater lakes just 40 mins from Tangowahine. Canoe, sail, jet-ski or simply enjoy the unspoilt paradise.

Kauri Forest

Take a trip to Trounson Park or the Waipoua Forest and see the largest kauri trees in the world. Check out Tane Mahuta (2000 yrs old) and Te Matua Ngahere, a venerable 4000 yrs old. Highly recommended: Waipoua Forest night tours for a very special and inspirational experience, complete with creatures of the night.

Walks on and around our farm

If you'd prefer something closer to home, take a ramble around our farm and in the hills above. Guided or unguided walks for 4 hours or more in the bush show you some spectacular scenery and from one point close by you can see both the east and west coasts of New Zealand. Finish your day with a lazy bush spa and dinner in the cottage or in the main homestead.

Quad bike rides on the beach

Quad bike 4wd rides on Baylys Beach are not to be missed. You can also take the bus for a 4wd beach bus tour if you'd prefer this to going by car.

Take a hot soak in the native bush spa

Relax in a peacefull setting of native bush and fauna while enjoying your favorite wine and listening to the extensive bird life after a busy day or long drive.

Swim with dolphins

Swim with the dolphins from Paihia, just over an hour's drive away.

Check out Dargaville

Check out the craft, kauri and gift shops in Dargaville, stopping for a coffee or meal at Blah Blah Blah cafe in Victoria St. Easily combined with a trip to Baylys Beach which is just 15 mins from Dargaville. Also worth seeing is the Dargaville Museum where you can see the masts of the Rainbow Warrior in the landscaped grounds. Spectacular by night, as is the Northern Wairoa River with the lights of Dargaville reflected.

Mangonui Bluff Walk

Take a walking tour up the well marked track to the top of the Mangonui Bluff for spectacular sea views of 90 Mile Beach and the longest driveable beach in New Zealand, Ripiro Beach. Track starts 40 mins drive from Tangowahine Farm. If you are going as a group, take two cars and do the full south to north crossing. Directions provided by your hosts.

Wairere Boulders

A trip to the incredible Wairere Boulders www.wairereboulders.co.nz from Tangowahine via Kaikohe and back through the Waipoua Forest is an awesome days outing with many places of interest en route. From the Kauri Trees to Swimming Holes, Hot Mud Pools, Vineyards, Beaches and scenery.

Life goals/personal direction

Take advantage of your relaxed frame of mind at Tangowahine and take a day to re-evaluate your personal direction and set your life goals for the next year. Pauline will guide you through a reflective and forward-looking seminar (two or more people) or a one-on-one experiential session.
